New Volunteer Guide

Teams Elite Concert & Concessions Training

More Than a Team. More Than a Fundraiser. This guide is designed to help new and returning volunteers feel comfortable, understand what to expect, and see how every shift supports Teams Elite athletes and families.

No experience required Every experienced volunteer was new once. We train you, help you, and support you.
You are not on your own. Shift leaders and experienced volunteers are there to guide you through your first event.
Every shift matters. Your time helps reduce travel, competition, hotel, and program costs for Teams Elite athletes.

Breaking Down the Barriers

We Are More Than a Team

Teams Elite is not just a skating organization. We are a community of families. We celebrate victories together, support each other through challenges, travel together, volunteer together, and create memories together.

When one team succeeds, we all succeed. Our goal is not just to build great skaters. Our goal is to build a great community.

This Is Supposed To Be Fun

Teams Elite believes the experience matters. Some of the best memories are not created during competitions. They are created while working concerts together, volunteering at events, traveling to competitions, celebrating accomplishments, and spending time with other Teams Elite families.

Fundraising should be enjoyable. This is an opportunity to spend time with other families while helping our skaters.

Nobody Knows What They Are Doing Their First Shift

Many people do not sign up because they are worried about not knowing anyone, never working concessions before, making mistakes, learning a cash register, learning venue rules, or working alcohol sales.

The truth is simple: every experienced volunteer felt exactly the same way. Every veteran volunteer was once brand new. Nobody expects you to know everything.

  • We train you.
  • We help you.
  • We support you.
  • You will never be left alone to figure it out by yourself.

One of the Best Ways to Meet Other Families

Many families spend years sitting at the rink and never really get to know one another. Working a concession shift gives you several hours to meet new families, learn about different teams, share experiences, and build friendships.

Many of our strongest Teams Elite friendships started while volunteering together. Come for the fundraising. Stay for the friendships.

Why We Need Everyone

The opportunities our athletes receive are incredible: competitions, travel, special events, and training opportunities. These experiences come with significant costs.

Every volunteer helps reduce those costs. Every shift matters. Every family contributes to our success. The stronger our volunteer participation, the stronger our organization becomes.

Our Culture

  • We do not judge. We help.
  • We do not criticize. We teach.
  • We do not leave people behind. We work together.
  • No one works alone.

Expectations & Operations

What Success Looks Like

Great volunteers are not experts. Great volunteers:

  • Show up on time.
  • Stay positive.
  • Ask questions.
  • Help others.
  • Stay engaged.
  • Keep moving.

You do not need experience. You simply need a willingness to help.

What To Expect On Your First Shift

Before Your Shift

  • Receive instructions.
  • Know where to park.
  • Know where to check in.

When You Arrive

  • Meet the shift leader.
  • Meet other volunteers.
  • Receive your assignment.
  • Get trained.

During Your Shift

  • Work alongside experienced volunteers.
  • Ask questions.
  • Learn by doing.

Remember: You are never expected to know everything.

Teamwork Makes Everything Easier

Every stand has different roles. Examples include:

  • Cashier
  • Beverage Station
  • Food Prep
  • Runner
  • Stocking
  • Cleanup

The best teams help wherever needed. If you see a line growing, help. If supplies are running low, restock. If someone needs assistance, jump in. The goal is not individual success. The goal is team success.

Customer Service Basics

Every customer interaction should include:

  • Smile
  • Eye contact
  • Friendly greeting
  • Helpful service
  • Thank you
Simple example: “Hi! What can I get started for you today?”

Friendly service creates better customer experiences and more sales.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

Avoid

  • Standing around.
  • Waiting to be told what to do.
  • Using phones.
  • Ignoring long lines.
  • Leaving stations unattended.

Instead

  • Stay active.
  • Look for ways to help.
  • Keep supplies stocked.
  • Support your teammates.
  • Focus on customers.

Ask Questions

If you do not know something, ask. Questions are encouraged. Nobody expects perfection. Your shift leaders and experienced volunteers are there to help.

Fundraising & Upselling

We Are More Than Volunteers

Every volunteer is also:

  • A fundraiser
  • A representative of Teams Elite
  • A brand ambassador

Every interaction helps support our athletes.

The Power of Upselling

Small increases create big results. Look at this simple example:

100 customers × $15 average sale = $1,500 total sales

100 customers × $18 average sale = $1,800 total sales

That is an additional $300 without serving a single extra customer.

Rule #1: Always Offer Something

Never stop at the initial order. Always offer one additional item.

  • “Would you like a water with that?”
  • “Can I get you another drink while you are here?”
  • “Would you like a snack to go with that?”

The worst thing that happens is they say no. The best thing that happens is additional fundraising dollars for Teams Elite.

The Double Drink Strategy

One of the easiest upsells is helping customers avoid another trip to the concession stand. Customers hate waiting in line.

Ask: “Would you like two so you do not have to come back later?”

Examples include:

  • Two waters
  • Two sodas
  • Two beers
  • Beer and water combination

This helps the customer and increases sales. Everyone wins.

Best Upsell Opportunities

  • Water: “Would you like a water for later?”
  • Soda: “Would you like two so you do not have to wait in line again?”
  • Beer: “Can I get you another one while you are here?”
  • Food: “Would you like a snack with that?”

Keep it simple. Keep it friendly. Ask every customer.

Concert Customer Psychology

Concert customers know lines get longer, intermission gets busy, and popular songs create rushes. Help them plan ahead.

  • “Want to grab another drink now so you do not miss part of the show?”
  • “Would you like a water for later?”

These suggestions help customers and increase fundraising revenue.

Team Upsell Challenge

Imagine 10 volunteers.

Each volunteer creates 10 additional sales.

Average upsell = $5.

10 × 10 × $5 = $500 additional revenue in one shift.

Now multiply that by an entire season. Small efforts create meaningful impact.

What Top Fundraising Teams Do

  • Smile
  • Stay positive
  • Ask every customer
  • Keep lines moving
  • Help teammates
  • Stay engaged

They do not wait for customers to spend more. They ask.

Final Thoughts

What We Hope You Leave With

  • Confidence: “I can do this.”
  • Community: “I know people who can help.”
  • Excitement: “This sounds fun.”
  • Purpose: “My efforts make a difference.”

Remember Why We Are Here

Every shift helps support:

  • Competition costs
  • Travel expenses
  • Hotels
  • Team experiences
  • Program growth

Most importantly, we are creating opportunities for our athletes. Together.

Teams Elite More Than a Team. More Than a Fundraiser. A Community of Families.
Let us have fun, support each other, and make this our best fundraising season yet.
